My favourite strips in the early days of 2000AD were the future sports stories.  Inferno and later on, The Mean Arena were the highlights of the comics for me.

Really original, or so I thought.  And then one day I was a second-hand book shop and found this:



Copyright 1975, the idea is almost identical to the Mean Arena Strip and some of the plot devices are similar.  Does anyone know if this has been mentioned as an 'inspiration' for the mean arena strip before?  I'm going to re-read it, now that I've found it again, and will report back as to just how similar the plot is.
