This might seem a bit weird, given my last post, but I would really like to be able to have a sensible conversation with a Scientologist. To try to find out what it is that they actually believe. I tend to take most people at face value about their beliefs, especially those who have demonstrated that they have actually thought about their views, rather than just accepting them without consideration.
Usually what follows is a fairly sensible discussion - although I do recall an american christian missionary who, I am totally convinced, stole my copy of A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick. He noticed it ont he shelf and told me it was a book that would lead me to evil - when he left it had gone.
That being said i've had very interesting times talking with Christians of every hue, Muslims, Jews and lots of self-styled pagans. In almost every case I find myself talking with a genuine person who holds their beliefs honestly and I usually end up learning something.
I'd like to do the same with a Scientologist. I've read all the books, the super-critical biographies of Hubbard and the church. I've watched the TV shows and my view of the movement and its founder is not positive. But there are normal decent people out there who become members of the Church of Scientology. I wonder if there are any who would be prepared to engage in a discussion of their beliefs outside of Church organised activities?
